Oh, I don't know. I've seen exactly the same phenomenon
over and over; the Fresedo or Tanturi comes on, a hush
falls over the floor, and everybody gets all introspective.
That is, until the gancho machines rev up and unleash
every one of their 57 variations.
It is specifically the tango nuevo enthusiasts who are
loudly revving their engines: nobody else knows so many
obnoxious steps. There used to be some people who did
stage tango, but that's kind of old-fashioned at this
point, or maybe tango nuevo is the new tango fantasia.
There are crappy dancers who dance salon or confiteria
styles but they are recognized as crappy by all and sundry.
What sets the tango nuevo crowd apart is that brutalizing
the music, and the ronda, is considered admirable.
