Chan and Eugenia Park advocate heel-first. Chan (formerly of NASA)
argues that the toe-first method throws a displeasing jolt into every
step of your walk because the toe and/or ball of the foot hits the
ground in a way that throws a wave of reverse energy into your forward
motion. You have two separate actions happening to the foot: the
toe/ball hits the ground to stop your forward motion and then the heel
settles to give you back your balance... It's a bumpy feeling.

Walking forward with the heel first has a more efficient flow--less
wasted energy. Smoother.

I just got back from the Park's workshop "Tango with the Buddha" in
upstate New York. Very enjoyable class! Be sure to catch Eugenia and
Chan if they teach in your area. You're in luck, Igor: they teach in
So.California July 21-22.
