It's interesting to see several foreign names listed among the finalists.
One member of each couple has to either have been born or reside in Buenos
Aires to be eligible. With so many foreigners moving to Buenos Aires,
future events will likely have more foreign competitors. The names Barbara
Wainright, Ellory Bryce, Otto Honeker, Hiroshi & Kyoko Yamao and Koji &
Naoko Hirai are definitely foreigners.
After hundreds competing in the qualifying rounds during May, the
semifinalists were narrowed down to 24 couples in Milonga and 30 couples in
Tango for the finals in two weeks on August 16 at La Rural. Fifteen couples
will compete in both Milonga and Tango categories. The top three couples in
Tango will go directly to the finals of the Campeonato Mundial; those
placing fourth through tenth go on to the semifinal rounds.
Noemi Yodice competed three years ago with a very young and inexperienced
partner. She is giving it another try this year with Guillermo Aristizabal
in Milonga. Elba Celia Biscay competed with Osvaldo Centeno in the 2005
Campeonato Mundial and will be competing with Antonio Yuffre in milonga and
tango for the finals of the Campeonato Metropolitano.
Roberto Montenegro and Cecilia Schvetz were one of 41 couples in the finals
of the Campeonato Mundial in 2005, and they are among the finalists this
year in the Campeonato Metropolitano in both categories. So are Adrian
Vellejos and Yanina Erramouspe who placed fourth in the 2005 Mundial. That
was the year when Richard Council and Colette Hebert represented the USA in
the tango salon category, but didn't place in the final ten. Ed Goytia and
Cyrena Drusine will be representing the USA in the semifinals of the
Campeonato Mundial de Tango beginning on August 17.
