Dear Sergio,

We were friends well before I became an organizer and
before I heard of Tango-L. But we merely danced and
socialized. I began reading Tango-L shortly after
becoming an organizer, and your postings (among
others) helped guide me toward a more open and
tolerant tango. They helped me appreciate the history
and traditions of tango. They opened up new doors to
a totally different culture and its art.

So, Sergio, unlike certain others who have left the
list, your postings have contributed a good bit to
tango, whether you realized it or not. They have
certainly helped transform our region, directly and
indirectly. While I might not have always agreed with
them, I knew they were meant to educate and stimulate,
not dictate or divide. There’s a quote of steel
industrialist Andrew Carnegie when he built
Carnegie-Mellon University that applies equally to
you, "My heart is in the work."

I recently read old postings from the Tango-L
archives. They appear more researched and
informational than they do now. I believe that this
change might indicate a return of tango back to the
people, as opposed to tango out of history books or
oral tradition. This tango is alive and evolving and
being practiced, with people exploring how to fit it
into the world they understand now.

Perhaps, with all of this extra time you’ll be
gaining, we will meet more often on the dance floor.

Besos,
Trini
