July 11 is celebrated in Buenos Aires as the Day of the Bandoneon,
established on the birthday of Anibal Troilo.

An homenaje to Anibal Troilo was held on July 18 with a concert by the
Orquesta de Tango de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires directed by Raul Garello.
Among the large audience attending the concert in the Salon Dorado de la
Legislatura de Buenos Aires was Ernesto Baffa, bandoneonista, who played
with Troilo. Troilo would have been celebrating his 92nd birthday last
week.

Raul Garello related that Troilo had owned four bandoneons. Thirty-one
years ago, he gave one of them to Garello. All those years, Garello has had
the instrument in his possession, but has never played it. With the respect
that so many have for Troilo, they don't feel themselves worthy of playing
his instrument. Troilo gave another bandoneon to Rodolfo Maderos and one to
Astor Piazzolla. After all these years, Garello gave his Troilo bandoneon
to the Academia Nacional de Tango so that young musicians may have the
opportunity to play the instrument of the greatest bandoneonista in the
world. It will be put on display in an enclosed glass case in the Academia
Nacional de Tango located on Avenida de Mayo.
