Hi there all listeros/as
Concerning the enquiry of ballroom dancing in Buenos Aires
1) the oficial tango site , that has a related link to the town hall government of buenos aires , is the www.tangodata.com.ar
It does not say a word about this World Council tournamente.
Maybe because the town hall government it is focused on the International tango-not-as-a-ballroom-dancing-just the ye old 2x4- stomping , that will start on february 27th 2007.
2) the sheraton hotel buenos aires, hosts this tournament, as some of their amenities , but it does not seem an open entertainment, just a subject in their pretty tight agenda of events , with conventions, workshops and other activities not tango related. As far as I know, the sheraton buenos aires, is still the largest hotel downtown in quantity of rooms , therefore their management of events is huge, it can host many events from different origin at the same time.
3) concerning the tango ballroom awareness in buenos aires , well... yes, there is an increasing interest, mostly by a popular program in an open air channel , hosts by Marcelo Tinelli, an entrepreneur that has several projects named " singing for a dream " , "dancing for a dream" and from 2007 "skating for a dream" .
Dancing for a dream, is a well known scheme borrowed from european an american TV ( italian RAI channel has something very alike called " dancing with the stars")
An unknown person presents his/her project & dream , which could be to build a house for elder people, cure a sick child with leukemia, etc.etc.. ( generally there is an emotional apelative to audience, in the projects/dreams)
The unknown person ( unknown= not a professional dancer or singer or whoever, an amateur) is teamed with an actress or dancer or vedette/stage dancer , and they have to perform several styles of ballroom, such as latin , salsa, disco, etc..etc..
There is tango also included, in an acrobatic fashion
Some couples are good, there was one with a young man and an actress, Maria del Carmen Valenzuela , with an impressive performance, considering she is 52 years old, and was out of the stage for a while.
All couples have professional coaches that train them during the week to rehearse for the style they have to dance , different from european and american ballroom competition, on the same night there are not different styles, just one style, all couples involved, that are given punctuation by a jury, and they are chosen to stay or to leave, from time to time , in a special night of " stay/get out" where the audience vote their opinion thorugh a 0 -600 prepay system , where the TV viewers cast their phone voat.
This is a very popular program, with the top rating for the night it runs , it can be very seldom in a second place, only if there is a special soccer event, as it was the world cup fifa 2006 . It is on the prime time hour, from 22 to 24 pm.
warm regards
alberto

Ballroom dancing does exist in Buenos Aires. In the Carlos Copello studio in
Abasto, an Argentine couple runs ballroom classes and they do have a good
number of men and women participating.
During my last visit to Bs As (Aug-Sep 2006), among other items on my
agenda, I made an effort to find out whether they dance the ballroom version
of tango.
Yes, they do - the class I attended happened to be a samba and ballroom
tango class. The men and women I talked to mentioned that they preferred
this version of tango because it was more elegant. Interesting! I enjoyed
the class, the people were friendly. At the end of the class, the male
instructor even danced a Viennese waltz with me . Whoopee!
