Dear residents,

October is Fire Prevention Month and I wanted to remind you about the policies and procedures for evacuating the building in the event of an emergency.

When an alarm sounds:

  * All residents must exit the building. This is required by the City of Cambridge and the state of Massachusetts. Failure to evacuate the building can result in fines or disciplinary action from MIT and/or the City of Cambridge Fire Department (CFD). Remember to grab your MIT ID to make re-entry faster.

  * Per state law, elevators cannot be used during an emergency evacuation. All residents must use the stairs. If you are unable to use the stairs, you should wait in your room or a designated area on your floor until CFD or MIT Police can safely evacuate you.

  * During an alarm/situation, residents should use all exit doors, including those with alarms. Never go through the building to exit through the main door, always use the exits closest to you.

  * If you exit into a courtyard, please continue through the gate onto the street. Courtyards are not safe staging areas due to their proximity to the building.

  * CFD expects all residents to be able to evacuate the building within 5 minute. High-rises with 10 or more floors should be able to evacuate within 7 minutes.

Exiting the Building:

  * Once outside, all residents should wait in the designated staging area. Tennis court area. Inclement weather. W85 lobby and basement lounge This area is located away from the building to ensure residents are safe from smoke and fire and not in the way of CFD. Never block the entrance or main sidewalk.

Re-Entry:

  * No one is allowed to re-enter the building until CFD gives the all clear. City officials will work with MIT staff to return the building to a safe environment as soon as possible and will then signal your return.

Thank you in advance for all of your help in taking emergencies seriously! Not sure where your evacuation area is? Questions about taking the stairs? Please stop by my office or email me at collinsm at mit.edu<mailto:collinsm at mit.edu> to talk about the evacuation plans.

Sincerely,

Michael Collins
