CRIME ALERT
Issued: September 21, 2004

With the start of the new academic year there have been a rash of thefts
from campus living halls. In all cases the items stolen were taken from
unlocked and unattended areas. Between September 1 - 20, 2004 there have
been seven incidents of burglary into dorms with six of the incidents
occurring on the west campus. There were two incidents at McCormick Hall
and one each at Burton-Connor, East Campus, MacGregror, New House and Next
House. The victims of these crimes have all reported wallets or laptop
computers stolen.

There are no descriptions of suspicious persons in the area of the thefts
and there is no particular day although the most common time frame is from
noon until midnight.

In this same time frame there have been several reports of backpacks stolen
from the Student Center.

Please take the following simple precautions to avoid becoming a victim:

  1) Be aware of strangers entering the building behind you, if you do not
know them, it is not rude to ask them to use their own card to enter!

  2) Never leave an entry door open! I find the back door as well as the
laundry door wide open and unattended all the time.

  3) If you see an entry door being propped open, shut and lock it!

  4) Call Campus Police whenever you see something strange! CP is here for
you and they want to be called no matter how small the incident may be.

  5) Always lock your apartment entry door! Even if you are home, someone
could sneak in while you are in the bath.

  6) Always keep your bedroom door locked! I enter many apartments for
maintenance and some bedroom doors are wide open, this is a dangerous habit.

These precautions are for the safety of every resident of Tang hall as
well as for yourself. We all must take responsibility for this security
and work together to keep our home secure.

If anyone has a question regarding this matter please let me know.
