Hi, all,
For anyone who might be interested, I will be speaking at an informal
"Cafe Sci," sponsored by WGBH and NOVA, this coming Monday (9
October) from 6-8pm. (Details below.) The topic will be recent
efforts by nuclear scientists to make a superheavy element -- element
114. More important, the bar where the discussion will be held is
going to make Oppenheimer martinis; not to be missed.
The Cafe Sci discussion will be based on the recent NOVA "Science
NOW" segment on the "island of stability," which aired last night on
PBS. On the off chance that you might have missed the show, you can
watch the segment here:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/3313/02.html
or listen to an audio podcast with more clips from my interview here:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/dispatches/060901.html
Special prize to anyone who can guess correctly in what room at MIT
my interview was filmed...
Hope you're all doing well -
best,
Dave

CAFÉ SCI TO MEET IN HARVARD SQUARE
Monday, October 9, 6-8pm
@ the Redline bar & grill, Harvard Square
59 JFK Street, www.redlinecambridge.com
Bored with the same tired old conversations? Come talk about
something so new no one knows what it looks, feels, or taste like - a
new arrangement of matter known only as element 114. Haven't heard
about it? That's because it doesn't exist. YET!
Is the element 114 cocktail best served on the rocks? Will 114
enable us to finally make smaller Ipods? How does the search for 114
provide a commentary on the practice of science? Will it destroy the
world?
You've got questions and we've got Dr. David Kaiser, faculty member
at MIT's Program in Science, Technology, and Society and Department
of Physics.
Talk with your mouth full: food and drink encouraged.
Café Sci is free and open to all.
Café Sci is part of a grassroots science café movement. Bring your
friends, tell your neighbors, post this message, and pass it along.
Café Sci is scheduled to meet next on November 20.
