Best Practice for UWL Change Control? [Scanned]

Hi,

We have bespok'ed the UWL XML file to add custom functionalities. I was wondering if there is any best practice around how to maintain this XML file in a route to live environment?

Any recommendations, eg

i)             store master xml on DEV portal & always export from there to upload to QAS & PRD

ii)            store master xml on network
