SAP Upgradation from 4.7 to ECC-Impact on old work items.

Hi All,
The client is going from 4.7 to ECC and had few FI-AP workflows.
 
-What happens to the work items that are carried from old system?
Do they need to complete the work items from old release before using the new system?
