Background Workflow steps taking many hours to execute

I found this in SDN, may be worth investigating:

"During the first background step of a workflow or with a background step
that occurs directly after a dialog step, the runtime system executes
a transactional RFC
in order to switch to the workflow background user. In rare cases,
this may cause the
background step to remain in the READY status and to only be executed
when RSWWERRE is next run."

Not sure where RFC errors are stored.
