HR on separate instance

Workflow Experts,
Working with a new client who is using Workflow extensively on a 4.6 system
with Org. Structure defined in the R/3 system. No they want to upgrade to
ECC 6.0 and they have a separate HR instance. Anyone can provide some
suggestion on how should workflows handle agent determination through the HR
on separate instance?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
