SRM WS14500015 N step item level approval and ad hoc approvers

I'm trying to prototype WS14500015 in SRM 550, the Line item level approval BADI.  Well it appears to do the job, until I start looking at Ad hoc approvers.  From an Approval I select the line item to see the Line Item Approval Preview (not the header level approval preview that says something about no preview available).  The Item level preview shows the approval chain.  But does not have any Add Approver/Reviewer buttons.  We tried the Add Agent BADI, that affected the buttons on the Header level Approver preview, but did not affect the Line Item Approval preview.  Anyone seen this, OK anyone got a clue why cos I'm scratchin my head!
