Capture Webservice Error in Workflow

I haven't gotten any response to my problem below. Can anyone help?

In talking with Basis, they cannot guarantee that SAP will go down first and back up last on the monthly IPL. Therefore, if SAP goes down last, the workflows will be trying to make calls over to the AS400 system, which will be down, and will put the workflows in error.

Is there a way to stop processing of all RFC calls from workflows before the systems are brought down for the IPL so the workflows will not go into error?

Subject: Capture Webservice Error in Workflow

We are on SAP ECC 6.0.

We have a workflow that calls out to our AS400 system for information via a Webservice call to Java. In the task that does the call over to the other system, one of the outcomes of this task is "Error when starting Webflow Service" which I have activated. If the call over fails due to the AS400 being down, this is the error that I get.

I wanted to capture when this happens in the workflow so I can have the workflow try again after a certain amount of time. The problem is that getting this outcome causes the workflow to go into error status, which keeps it from getting to the next step that will call the function module to restart the workflow after error and then loop back around to try the call again later.

Is there a way that I can get this to work? Or, is there a way that the workflow can figure out if the called system is down before it makes the Webservice call over for the information?

Thanks for your help!
