Portal Integration with WF

Hi All,

We are trying to develop a custom tool for portal,
and are planning to use WF for the Approval process,

They want the ability for the Approver to approve the Request without going
into
the UWL .
The approver screen basically contains a list of all the pending requests,
by clicking on which
he will see more details of the individual request, which he can then decide
to approve or reject.

So now when he clicks on Approve button(custom screen) , am not sure how to
link it to the Workitem or
WF .So how would he be able to execute the WI ?

Is there a way to execute a WI from the portal.
will it need any config ?

Appreciate any input, am not a portal person, so any input to understand the
process is appreciated.
