How to find current agent?

Hello,

I am setting up deadline monitoring for a workflow
with multiple sub-workflows (down 3-4 levels) and over
60 steps that could generate work items.  Rather than
add deadline details to each of the steps of the
workflow (and sub-workflow), I am hoping to be able to
model the deadline at the workflow level. The deadline
notifications/emails need to be routed to the current
agent who has the work item. 

The question I have is, how to determine the current
agent? (Agent determination is done using different
techniques - responsibilities, positions, etc. There
could also be multiple agents assigned to a position.)
