Connect UWL to WAS 6.20 without ITS?

Hello,

Does anyone out there know if it is possible to connect an universal 
worklist running on EP 7.0 to an R/3 system running on was 6.20 without 
using an ITS?

We do not have any ITS, but we would still like to go live now with UWL. 
And we are upgrading our R/3 to NW2004s in only a bit less than a year...
