workflow Activation in 4.7

Hi All,
  I need some suggestions regarding the Workflow Activation in the system. Finally my client decided to have some workflows in MM & PM. I need to activate the workflow engine.
  I know little bit that I need to  activate the items in SWU3..what are the other tasks I need to activate and configure and test to develop my first workflow.
   
  please let me know what kind of problems may occur in first time activation. 
   
  ----how I can configure Outlook with SAP to send  mails to out look..
   
  do I need to create sy-batch to activate I assume this will already exists..
   
   
  please provide me the list of tasks to perform to develop an initial workflow...
   we are in 4.7
