Ad hoc Agent Assignment

Hi all

Can anybody please tell me how ad hoc agent assignment works? Where can I
find any online documentation on this matter?

What my issue is that , An event is triggering my workflow and that event is
passing certain values into my workflow container which i have to use to
determine the agent using a rule. I want to add an activity that works in
background, determine the agent according to the rule and assign it in an
object in my workflow container. Using this i will be sending a mail prior
to sending the task to the agent.

The process is of releasing a Purchase Order and the agent is determined
using "mm_po_rel" role.
