How does Desktop Workplace connect to SAP

  I want to know how does Desktop Workplace connect to SAP - which RFC function module is called to establish the link
   
  I remember seeing a table with license/registration keys for desktop workplace - but i cannot recall the name of this table in SAP - how is this table maintained from which transaction
