output type messages and workflow

Hi,

Could you brief me on how to create a new output type to link a sales order 
save....to a message
and trigger a workflow. I have created a new output type, however I don't 
think it's complete.
There is a program called RVNSWE01 which I have assigned and a routine 
called CREATE_EVENT. I need some clarity regarding that. Also can I pass 
container elements to the workflow from this?
Help will be appreciated.
