Setting Status of Work item after forwarding

We have a workflow for travel expense approvals - BUS2089.  When an expense report is forwarded in our workflow, the subsequent task does not change the status of the trip as it is suppose to.  For example, the workitem (expense report) is forwarded and has a status of Trip On Hold/To Be Settled.  The subsequent agent rejects the workitem (expense report).  The workitem (expense report) should now have a status of Trip Completed/Open.  It does not.

Any ideas?
