Workflow in portal How to ?

Hello All,

We want to implenet     for first time  workflow in  Absence Approval .
we have SAP version 4.6 c  and  want to activate the  process=20
through JCO calls .i.e getting   user inbox workitems ,  view absence  =
request=20
and implementing  user-decision of the approval   steps   =20
can you advice how to implement those tasks ? (bapi , rfc?)

we understand that we build the workflow in sap  but don't know  to =
perform  those actions from=20
within SAP portal witout using ITS .
