deactivate old workitems

Why not use one of the SAP_WAPI function modules to set the existing workflows to "Cancelled" status.

Hello All,
 
We are  on EBP 3.0. We replaced an old workflow with new one. However, the
business wants to prevent the users processing workitems of old workflow.
Our old workflows are deactivated and corresponding entries in 'Start
conditions' are deactivated. This will prevent triggering old workflows but
do not prevent users from processing the pre existing ones. I do not want to
delete old workitems from audit perspective but want to set them to
'Inactive' status.
 
Is there any elegant way doing this. Any help is highly appreciated.
