Workflow In-box - Help End users with work item in their In-box

Hi,
 
We are in 4.6C and in mid of implementing Travel Management.
 
User will be keying in Expenses related to Travel or Non-Travel via PR05
over ESS. Expense request will be submitted to Travel Accountant then to
Manager for  approval. We will be using Custom workflow for trip approval
process and user specific tasks will be  delivered to individual to in-box
over ESS.
 
My questions is ,
 
Is it possible to present users with the only workflow Tasks , messages
etc?
If answer is yes then how difficult it is to develop ZINBOX version of
IN-BOX?
What is the starting point? How much work is involved? Did anybody tried
this option?
If answer is not can u share the alternatives or end user experiences?
