Link to an external document

We have a need to automatically attach a file link to a work item.
Currently we are using SOFM method IMPORTFILE, but that saves the entire
=66ile.  Does anyone know of a way to attach a shortcut to a file without
having to create the shortcut manually=3F  We do not want to import the
entire file into SAP due to bandwidth concerns and space limitations.
