That is a solution that has been mentioned and my favoured route.
I may have to convince them to use this option if customizing it proves too
troublesome.

Hello,
Has anyone ever tried customizing the workflow inbox ?
Specifically, when a user double-clicks on a work item they automatically
reserve it.
Can this action be captured and a Z table updated with the name of the
person who has reserved it.
Crazy requirement and potentially fraught with problems I know, but I've
been asked to investigate whether it is possible.
