Possible to change sendmails to work items?

I've a question for you experts.
I have implemented a workflow and would like to convert the sendmail tasks
so that they appear in the workflow inbox as work items rather than
sapmails.  Is there a simple way of doing this?
 
Also I have some sendmail tasks in abap code which i'd like to convert to
generating workitems, has anyone used the wapis for generating work items,
any suggestions would be appreciated i.e trigger an event wapi vs create
workflow and parameters required??
