Workflow and call to external database

G'day all,
 
we are in 4.6c
 
We wrote a method that calls an external database (Oracle) to retrieve
some information required for the workflow.
 
We tested the method in SWO1 and works fine, i.e. it reads the Oracle
database and returns the expected fields.
 
I included the method in my workflow and it is not working, the step that
calls the method stays 'In Process' forever. The method is defined as
background and synchronous.
 
Any ideas what I am missing?
