SAP Exchange Connector & SAP MAPI

Hi all -
 
We are talking about a limited implementation of the SAP MAPI at my =
client, for a small number of users, and while I have configured the =
MAPI before, I keep reading about the SAP Exchange Connector on OSS.  I =
am not sure if there is a piece on the Exchange server required for MAPI =
usage that I am missing.  Is the Exchange connector required on the =
server if the MAPI is to be used?
 
Another question I have - how do people feel regarding the impact the =
MAPI has on Outlook performance?  I have heard several different things, =
but am looking for some good advice on whether to use the MAPI/not.
