Archiving workitems from outbox

Hello All,
 
We are trying to get rid of all executed workitems from individual person's
outbox since it is really growing up huge and we believe it is taking up
considerable time when accessing the UWL from Portal. Is there a way
workflow admin can get rid of these workitems ?. I have seen some options in
office settings but it looks like it is applicable for only office
documents.
