BUS1077 should be a lot of help, as indicated by Christopher.
In the workflows I have been extending there was a separate object type for
EH&S reports -- custom coded within the company. And it made sense in that
particular scenario...

Did you have to create many object types from scratch? It doesn't seem
that SAP delivers the required object types for EH&S?
 
The focus is on the IH&S and we are on version 4.6c.
 
Any further tip that you can give me on this matter will be greatly
appreciated! Any recommendations on where to go for further documentation?

I have built some workflows in EH&S & recipe management around
specifications and formulas. I built a custom object based on BUS1077.
I did use some of the many user exits (i.e. when a substance is saved) to
create events for most of the workflows, as well as statuses and custom
transactions to trigger the other workflows.
