EDI Invoices and Archiving attachments

Hi,
I have the following requirement:
 
1) trigger a workflow from incoming IDoc interface
2) "attachments" to the invoices arrive separatelly and are stored on say,
a local server, these are to be linked and archived with the incoming
invoice (background task).
 
I have a solution for the first task, I have a concept for the second part
but  would like to hear how anyone else has implemented this scenairo.
