Terminating Workflows

Good morning all
We have a workflow for PR Release, the requestor gets notified the his or
her PR has been released.  To terminate the workflow the user has to execute
the notification item, this does not always happen, which results in a
number of WF's remaining in the In Progress state.  What effect, if any does
this have on the system??
