Background call to remote procedure

Hi Workflowers,
I have the following problem. I have created a process in HR that
is triggered by an IT0006 (Addresses) change. At a certain point
a remote procedure in PLSql is called via an rfc server, which
triggers a DB update. After successfully updating the DB record
I would like to invoke an RFC back to my workitem which remains
in status waiting currently.
 
What would you recommend in this case.
 
Should I use a terminating event?
Should I pass the WIID to an external table and rfc the WIID back to
my process?
 
Any hints or ideas are much appreciated.
