How do you get an object to appear as an attachement to tasks/use r decisions?

Hi,
 
Hopefully someone can help with an extremely frustrating problem.
Am fairly new to workflow, and the custom object that is triggering a custom
workflow is not showing up on any of the user decisions by default.
(Am I missing something incredible stupidly that has to be set up?)
 
When I try and bind the object to the task as an attachment it says the
object is not of type SOFM.
Help!.
