I fully agree with what Stephan said.
Just one comment: Sometimes one wants to know the definition version of
a
running workflow. We can find it this way:
- SE16: table SWP_HEADER-WFD_VERSION
- TA SWI1 (workitem selection), F-Container,
  Element "Workflow" = Objectreference FLOWITEM
  attribut FLOWITEM.Definitionsversion
