Default Approver for ESS Create Leave Request

Hello,
I've just joined this workflow user group, so please forgive me if I initially
post questions that have been posted in the past. I am in the process of trying
to read recent archive files.

I am looking at service WS20000081 (Leave Request). From what I can gather it
defaults in the approver as the results of standard role 00000168 (Manager
(US)).

The requirement here is that it may not be the manager who is the approver of
the leave request.
The manager can choose someone else to approve the leave request, not
necessarily in the same org unit.
Also, they may choose someone else to approve overtime requests. So it is not a
straightforward delegation for all workflows. There will be other delegations
other than leave and overtime.

As a result of our requirement, standard role 00000168 will not be sufficient.

(a) We are not wishing to change how the ESS ITS screen works, but is there a
method to bring up a different default approver than what is proposed by role
00000168? Are there any user exits that can come into play here? I have already
looked at user exit HRPTIM06 which allows you to define a list of approvers to
choose from, but this cannot default an approver other than the one proposed by
role 00000168. Also, if we are able to invoke a role other than 00000168, how do
we go about making the approver fields output only, once the approprate approver
is defaulted in?

(b) If (a) is not possible, then the next place to change the role resolution is
in workflow WS20000081 itself. This means the user would not know up front who
their leave request was being sent to for approval. WS20000081 does not have
role resolution for the 'Check Leave' step, instead sending the work item to the
user entered in the web screen. We would want to change the step to have role
resolution for a role we develop. We prefer not to repair the existing workflow
WS20000081, so we will need to clone the workflow. What problems are there in
copying the workflow and transaction for WS20000081?

Regards,
Branco Marcina
