Business Object Builder

Hi Everyone,
 
I found a Business Object (SW01) that I can use to
build a new workflow.  But I need to create a new
event and a new method.  Can I just modify SAP's
object?   Someone told me that I need to "extend" that
object.   I'm not sure what that means.
 
We have some ZBUSxxxx object types that are a subitem
of the SAP object.
