Hi Casey,
You need to give us more details.
That sort of functionality works fine at other customers so to find out
what's going
wrong we would need more info. E.g.
1) How are the AP clerks rerouting the item, i.e. what do you mean by
"change assignment"?
Is this forwarding the workitem or are you using some other technique?
2) What is the workitem going into error? E.g. what message is sent to the
workflow administrator?
Is the problem that the new AP clerk is not a possible agent of the
workitem?
Is it a buffering issue?

Either way, to fix a workitem in error, you usually:
Diagnose the problem, fix the cause if you can, restart the workitem, adjust
or forward as necessary.
Check the workflow above has also restarted (depends a lot on which release
you are working on and
the type of problem as to whether the system will automatically restart the
workflow), if not restart the workflow.

Workflow gurus,

In general, how does one go about correcting workitems that are in error.
WE
have an AP workflow implemented here and a piece of its functionality is not
working in production. That functionality is when an AP clerk can't
process
the workitem, they do a change assignment to route it to another AP clerk.
So
when the AP clerks go to use that functionality, the workitem errors and
leaves
their inbox and is routed to the workflow administrator.

Please Advise,

Casey
