Assuming your going to use ESS within Workplace
There are a number of ESS scenarios that use Workplace,
notably the Leave and Book Training Scenarios, but there are other workflows
involved.
you should be able to get an ESS Book from SAP with that information.

I believe there are other workflows involved with recruitment, hiring,
termination and W2 reprint.
some of these are country specific.

If your going to develop your own scenarios with Workplace, then they might also
include workflow.

as for SWU3, if you use workflow, you'll need to use SWU3 to setup the workflow
environment.

Subject: Workflow Environment Customizing (SWU3)

Hello all.

We are in the process of setting up some mySAP.com Workplace servers (4.6c)
and I'm wondering if there's any need to run transaction SWU3 to customize
the workflow environment. Can anybody confirm whether there's any reason to
do that, and if so, what workflow functionality you might use on a Workplace
server?

Thanks for any information you can provide.
