Plan version and workflow

Hi,
 
I would like to use a for my workflow a plan version which is different form the
one that the HR module looks at, which if I am not wrong is the active version.
I need to create a different and simplefied plan version to route the "superior"
role resolution.
Is this possible?
Otherwise how could i overcome the problem?
