Sending Workitems to Lotus Notes

Hi Bettina,
here some consideration about integrating notes with SAP R/3....

There is different options you have:
One is using Connector solution provided by Lotus such as the LEI or DECS.

But in your case I would keep it simple (KISS principle:)
A simple fast and 'easy' integration could be done the following way.
You would have to install a socalled MTA wich is the Messaging transfer
agent from Lotus
Notes on a Domino server. You configure the MTA to listen to a Port from
which R/3 is sending
using the SAPConnect interface (SCOT) this communication is bi-directional.

Consider that LN is a very good Mailing system and not a Database Management
System...but most of all
if you use a distributed Lotus Notes Architecture think of the Replication
Problems you have with multiple
LN DBs and the issue you will have with your Network Administrator when you
ask him to replicate DBs between
distributed Domino Servers.
Maybe you think to dealing with offline responses to workitems.

Nevertheless there are answers to all questions using Literature currently
available.

There was a good article on Computerwoche Spezial last year in September for
more technical details
...
Additionally...
You will have to get acquainted with the Lotus Notes Mail template which
will be distributed by the Domino Administrator
to allow you to access a R/3 system using a mail template.
If you want to encapsulate Object method from R/3, then you should look into
LSX a simple scripting language (BASIC compatible) that allows to call RFC
enabled function modules from outside R/3 over TCP/IP. You don't need the
SAPGUI but you also cannot use RFCs that requires a UI.

You maybe want to look into the BOR or Objecttype enhancement of the R/3
Business Object Repository. That is where you have to write your method in
order to invoke them from LSX.

If you need more detailed info, let me know...

Bettina, I work in Statoil (a Norwegian oil and gas company), and we have
had
approximately the same requirement as you. Since we use IS Oil which is not
yet
available on newer releases than 3.1 we are using the strategy mentioned by
Rakesh and commented on by Peter. Our users get their work items in the
Lotus
Notes mailbox.
Work item messages are displayed in a customised form where they get the
work
item text as message subject, see the description in the message body and
have
four actions available. Two of these are for reading a WI attachment if it
exists and executing the workitem, the last two takes the user to pages on
the
intranet for troubleshooting or a process description.

If you are interested in our solution you may contact us directly. We are
not a
software company selling off the shelf solutins, but sometimes our solutions
have been sold on an as-is basis (source code included) to other companies.
I
have no idea what price Statoil would want. The ideas have hereby been made
available for free.

Subject: Sending Workitems to Lotus Notes

Hi all,

has anybody made experience in sending workitems to Lotus Notes?
What tasks are to do and what kind of system requirements are necessary
(e.g. SAP Mapi)?

We would like to send some of the workitems of our Workflow to Lotus Notes
because the user (manager) doesn't want to work with the SAP Business
Workplace.

Is there any kind of documentation?

Best wishes,

Bettina
