BDC and Status Management

We've a workflow which uses some BDC code within methods to set system/user
statuses on Engineering Change Requests.  How do I go about figuring out
what code can be put in the command field to mimic selecting a certain
system/user status?  For example, to set the system status "Approve ECR"
command SM03 was used (i.e. perform build_bdc tables bdctab using
BDC_OKCODE' 'SM03').  I'd like to know how our workflow consultant figured
out what command to use.
