SAP Workflow - Integrating with external systems

Stephan,
 
Can you tell me a little bit more about how to access these APIs and what
the development class is ?
 
Also if you've used the API's would you say that it's best to use them
directly or use a product like
Visual Edges Madrid which as you say probably wraps around the APIs ?
