MIT students against Egyptian – American tycoon campus lecture tomorrow:
Supporters of North Korean regime such as Naguib Sawiris are not welcome in MIT
Sawiris, a telecom tycoon, had invested hundreds of millions of dollars in North Korea, which was compared to Nazi Germany by the UN last week
We, the conscientious students of MIT, wish to express our protest against the Egyptian Students Association (ESA) upcoming event ‘Doing Business in the Middle East and Egypt: Q&A Session with Naguib Sawiris’ (scheduled for this Tuesday, February 25th). Naguib Sawiris, a successful Egyptian and American businessman, is also a well-known accomplice of the current North Korean regime, which is infamous for its cruelty and repeated violations of all basic human rights against its own citizens.

Sawiris has been profiting from his close ties with the North Korean government since 2008, when he established his local exclusive telecom provider in the country- Koryolink. He has since been known for his close ties with late dictator, Kim Jong Il, and recently with his son and successor, Kim Jong Un. Sawiris had also visited the country several times, where he was greeted with a reception reserved only to the regime’s most valued partners.

These days we are hearing more and more about the true cruel and murderous nature of the North Korean government- just last week a UN panel stated that the current regime in North Korea is reminiscent with the Nazi regime! In a time when the UN Human Rights Committee publishes horrific testimonies of the numerous atrocities committed by the North Korean dictatorship against its own citizens, we feel it is extremely inappropriate and unacceptable to host a businessman who cooperates so closely with the perpetrators. A respected institute such as MIT should not allow such a man to take part in any formal event held in campus- it is time to take a stand and send a message. The university should not allow the Sawiris Q&A events to take place!

Sincerely,
Students for Human Rights.
