Many of the fluorescent labels available today have low brightness, bleach, blink, degrade during excitation, or are toxic to cells. Over the past decade, the nitrogen vacancy color center in diamond has emerged as a stable and bright emitter for imaging and precision sensing. The first part of this talk will discuss the fabrication of diamond nanocrystals with high-quality NV centers. In the second part, I will focus on the use of such probes in imaging and sensing, focusing on wide-field super-resolution microscopy and recent progress towards high-speed detection of electrical activity in neurons.
