At a MIT/MOS seminar back in 2000 a provocative question was asked about why the Raman effect in a carbon nanotube was so strong. The answer to this question inspired an attempt to do single nanotube spectroscopy. The resulting successful demonstration opened up the field of new methods for optics to measure the (n,m) chirality of tubes, including the use of optics: 1. to identify whether a given nanotube is metallic or semiconducting and 2. to open up the investigation of (2n+m) family behavior in carbon nanotubes. The talk will give more details on these developments and will discuss recent research directions in nanocarbons that have been pursued. Some photos from the 2012 Kavli ceremony will also be shown.
