Towards a molecular description of ultrafast charge transfer reactions

The outcome of any ultrafast photoinduced charge transfer reaction depends on the complex interplay of atomic and electronic degrees of freedom on the timescale of a molecular vibration. In this talk, I will (i) describe the role of coupled high frequency vibrations in the ultrafast back electron transfer in a cyano-bridged mixed-valence complex [(CN)5FeII–CN–PtIV(NH3)4–NC–FeII(CN)5]4– (FeIIPtIVFeII) dissolved in D2O using nonlinear femtosecond spectroscopies and (ii) develop a detailed description of valence electron motion in a Ru(II) solar cell dye using transient Ru L-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy.
